Price risk management for metals producers
For a producer, the metal is the revenue. From the moment ore leaves the ground to the settlement of an offtake contract, the price received drives margins, capital programmes and board decisions.
The exposure profile of producers
A producer is structurally long the metal it mines, and that exposure is rarely a single flat price. Offtake contracts typically reference exchange averages with treatment and refining charges, payability terms, freight and quality differentials layered on top, and the horizon between production and sale is measured in months. Hedging revenue is therefore not a trading decision but a board-level one: it interacts with expansion plans, lender covenants and shareholder expectations.
Financing adds its own constraints: credit facilities may restrict, require or price around hedging programmes, and stakeholders who do not trade need hedge outcomes explained in plain terms. A producer's programme has to be explainable, auditable and aligned with the physical reality of the mine plan, not a book of positions bolted on afterwards.
What this means for your price risk programme
- Policy, goals and benchmarks set at board level before any hedge is placed
- Hedge strategy aligned with offtake contracts, quality differentials and the mine plan
- Forward market management that adapts to contango, backwardation and market conditions
- Explainable reporting that satisfies lenders, auditors and boards in both volumetric and financial terms
